Mapping the Uncanny Valley: Generative AI in Media

By Greg Anderson

The concept of the “uncanny valley,” first articulated by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970, describes the discomfort people feel when confronted with humanoid robots or digital creations that are almost, but not quite, human-like.

As technology advances, this valley narrows, leading to a fascinating evolution in human perception and acceptance of AI-generated audio, video, text, and images.  This journey reflects not just technological improvements but also our growing ability to forgive imperfections and embrace these creations as part of our reality.

Humans are beginning to step into the valley, meeting AI halfway.

Updates from Wendy Turner-Williams

A wide banner image of a group of cowboys planning around a campfire with an AI twist. The scene is set in a desert with a warm, glowing campfire in the center. The cowboys are a mix of traditional Western attire and futuristic enhancements, such as robotic arms and cybernetic eyes. They are looking at a holographic map projected from a device on the ground. In the background, there are high-tech gadgets and AI-powered devices scattered around. The sky has a blend of natural night colors with digital overlays, giving a sense of blending the old with the new.

Dear Members,

As we close the first half of 2024, the rapid pace of technological advancement in artificial intelligence continues to accelerate. The judicial and regulatory gaps are a major problem; in fact, I would take it a step further to say the archaic judicial and regulatory processes are a bad actor enabler. The legal voids, when paired with “anything goes in the name of technological advancement mentality,” have created a landscape that increasingly resembles the untamed frontier of the Wild West.
