Embracing the AI Revolution: A Landmark Moment

By Brandon Swinford

On October 30th, President Biden issued a pivotal Executive Order (EO) aimed at focusing on the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is safe, secure, and trustworthy. As the AI Safety Summit 2023 commences today in the UK, this EO highlights the United States’ commitment to a critical objective: striking the right balance between embracing AI’s transformative power and mitigating its potential risks.

The success of this EO in striking this delicate balance remains to be seen. While executive orders come with inherent limitations—they can lack adequate appropriations, be subject to judicial review, and are reversible by future administrations—this initiative is undoubtedly a significant step forward. Its comprehensive scope, touching all sectors, underscores the urgent need for the US to defend against threats to national and economic security, health and safety, and to maintain its leadership and growth in AI.

Reflecting on the White House’s Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights

By Wendy Zhang

The White House’s newly released guiding principles for AI represent a strategic approach to ensuring ethical and responsible integration of this technology into our societal and economic fabric. These principles—covering safe systems, algorithmic fairness, data privacy, transparency, and the availability of human alternatives—provide a robust framework addressing AI’s multifaceted challenges. Unified in their goal, they underscore a commitment to ensuring AI’s deployment not only advances innovation but also safeguards individual rights and dignity. While each principle converges on this overarching objective, their specific focus varies, from addressing potential biases and data security concerns to emphasizing the importance of human intervention.

WatersTechnology’s Operational Efficiency Summit

By Peggy Tsai

I recently attended the Operational Efficiency Summit conference in NYC sponsored by WatersTechnology, which focused on gathering data and technology professionals to unleash the power of data, technology, and the cloud.

While the focus of all recent business conferences has been centered on Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI, it was certainly not the intention for this conference.

Instead, data professionals need to focus on the what, when, and how of implementing business use cases for AI. Without any vendor pitches or presentations at the conference, the content centered around industry leaders including non-capital market presenters, sharing their current implemented programs and roundtable topics on mock company situations to share best practices in our respective industries.
